In a powerful display of international solidarity and corporate responsibility, a coalition of 18 diamond companies based in Antwerp has successfully completed the delivery of life-saving medicines to Gaborone, Botswana. This final shipment arrived following a critical shortage of essential medications that led Botswana to declare a State of Emergency in 2025.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC) in conjunction with the Botswana government, aims to provide approximately 35,000 patients afflicted with cardiovascular diseases and diabetes with a full year's supply of necessary treatments. This compassionate act emerged from Botswana's urgent healthcare challenges.
During a visit to Antwerp in November 2025, Ms. Bogolo Joy Kenewendo, Botswana's Minister of Minerals and Energy, expressed profound gratitude to the participating firms at an event held at the esteemed Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp. Her acknowledgment highlighted the significance of this support in bolstering public health during a critical period.
Mr. Isidore Mörsel, President of the AWDC, emphasized the industry's commitment, stating, "When Botswana faced an urgent healthcare challenge, our industry responded because our relationship extends far beyond commercial transactions. We are proud that the natural diamond sector could stand alongside Botswana at a critical moment and contribute to improving the lives of thousands of people." The 18 Antwerp-based companies that financially contributed to this humanitarian effort include Andre Messika, Ankit Gems, Anita Diamonds, Bonas Group, Choron–AMC, Dali Diamond, Dharm Diam, Ferrari, HB Antwerp, Malca Amit, Pluczenik, Rosy Blue, Rubel & Ménasché, Samir Gems, Sheetal, Shivam, Taché, and Veediam. This collective action not only provided tangible relief but also strengthened the enduring ties between the diamond trade and the nation of Botswana, where diamond trade with Belgium alone was valued at approximately $963 million in 2025.
