The final figure stands at C$3.34 billion, representing a marginal increase from earlier projections. The organization also disclosed preliminary and revised loss figures for other recent catastrophic weather events across various Canadian regions, suggesting a potentially record-breaking year for natural disasters.
CatIQ's Latest Assessments on Canadian Weather Events
On August 5th, 2026, CatIQ officially confirmed that the devastating hailstorm striking Calgary, Alberta, two years prior, resulted in an insured industry loss of C$3.34 billion. This updated figure surpasses the one-year post-event estimate of C$3.29 billion, released in August 2025, and the C$3.25 billion estimate from six months after the event. The initial estimate from September 2024 had already placed losses above C$2.8 billion.
Caroline Floyd, Director at CatIQ, noted that despite the sheer scale of the 2024 Calgary hailstorm, which is Canada's largest hail catastrophe, over 95% of reported claims have now been resolved. This period saw intense thunderstorms, flash flooding, hail up to 40 mm in diameter, and at least two confirmed tornadoes, culminating a heatwave. Ottawa's National Capital Region experienced torrential rainfall, with nearly 120 mm recorded on July 1st. A second update for these market losses is scheduled for August 17th, 2026.
Furthermore, CatIQ provided a 45-day post-event loss estimate for the Montreal and surrounding area flooding event from June 20th to 21st, 2026. This second estimate, covering property and vehicle claims, stands at C$411 million, a slight increase from the initial C$409 million.
