Fendi is returning to its roots in Rome, choosing the prestigious National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art for its next couture presentation, a collection envisioned by Maria Grazia Chiuri. This significant event on July 9 will also feature a preview of an exclusive exhibition dedicated to the indelible legacy of Karl Lagerfeld, titled “After un Percorso di Lavoro. Fendi/Karl Lagerfeld 1985. After Steps Through Work.” The public will have the opportunity to experience this special showcase from July 10 through October 25.
The historical backdrop for these events, the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, is housed within a former Barefoot Carmelite monastery dating back to the 17th century. Its extensive collection boasts over 3,000 sculptures, paintings, and graphic works from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, featuring renowned artists such as Giacomo Balla, Giorgio de Chirico, and Renato Guttuso. This location adds a layer of cultural depth to Fendi’s presentation, celebrating both fashion and art in a grand setting. Maria Grazia Chiuri's appointment as chief creative officer last October, following her tenure at Dior, marks a new chapter for Fendi, with her runway debut occurring at Milan Fashion Week in February.
This upcoming show continues Fendi’s tradition of staging couture outside Paris and marks the third such event in its home city of Rome. Previous Roman presentations include the 2016 Haute Fourrure show at the Trevi Fountain, which marked the brand’s 90th anniversary and celebrated its role in the monument's restoration, and the 2019 show at the Temple of Venus, another site benefiting from Fendi's philanthropic efforts. Similarly, Chiuri’s personal connection to Rome is evident through her recent efforts in restoring the Teatro della Cometa, showcasing a dedication to preserving the city’s rich heritage alongside her fashion endeavors.
