Emerging Design Talents Shine at Ukurant Makes Room in Copenhagen
From June 10th to 12th, 2026, the historic Fabrikken in Copenhagen's 2300 district transformed into a vibrant hub of innovation, hosting the Ukurant Makes Room exhibition as part of the annual 3 Days of Design festival. This unique event, spearheaded by Copenhagen-based designers Kamma Rosa Schytte, Josefine Krabbe, Kasper Kyster, and Lærke Ryom, brought together 26 international emerging creatives. Their collective vision was to challenge conventional design norms, where 'good design' often prioritizes low cost and rapid production, by instead fostering a community dedicated to experimental and artistic craftsmanship.
Among the featured works were Montreal-based Atelier Fomenta's cylindrical side tables, adorned with rubber tablecloths that evoked the charm of elaborately frosted cakes. German-Portuguese designer Cristiano Picão Pereira presented striking boxy vases crafted from delicate layers of drywall, reminiscent of architectural formations or geological plates. Danish glassblower Julie Fuhlendorff captivated with her fluid, amorphous candleholders, deliberately crafted to defy technical perfection. A highlight was Danish designer Lasse Sylvest Lilleør's glossy black sun lounger, whose spinal column-inspired form, made from UV-resistant ASA plastic and aluminum, reimagined outdoor seating. Austrian designer Jakob Niemann showcased his commitment to organic materials with a spindly stool fashioned from raw branch wood, a continuation of his distinctive series. Finnish designers Anton Mikkonen and Tatu Laakso also contributed, with Mikkonen presenting robust pinewood tables and a steel stool, and Laakso exhibiting a sturdy chair and stool in solid oak and MDF, finished with shellac and polyurethane. These diverse pieces collectively underscored Ukurant's mission to support young designers in navigating their path from study to industry, cultivating a collaborative spirit over competitive rivalry.
